Careers In Cafes In Modern Society

By Byron Jonas

More and more, people are choosing careers in cafes as a way to make living. This is obviously due to the remarkable explosion in popularity coffee and cafes have enjoyed in the last fifteen to twenty years. No other product is so widely accepted and thus business is booming. This means more money and more opportunity for workers in these types of jobs.

There have always been cafes and people have always consumed coffee, at least since its discovery. However, in the past two decades or so, something strange has been happening: society has been loving and consuming coffee as if it were going out of style. Cafes have been multiplying and people have been frequenting them, more than church, the movies and even the mall. Now they are everywhere and people love them and respect them as legitimate worthy businesses.

One popular career choice, which in the past has not really been considered a career, is that of the barista. Baristas, similar to waiters, are the preparers and servers of the coffee and other edibles in the cafe. Depending on the size of the cafe and its menu selection, a barista may be literally running around with all types of specialty coffees and food. It is from this waiter like activity that a barista makes most of his or her money. Tips are commonly given and are actually now expected in most places. In big cities, these gratuities add up to tens of thousands a year, just in tips.

Choosing to be a manager of a cafe is a good career choice. Not only are these jobs plentiful, they are challenging and pay well. They make more money today than before due to the fact that menus are bigger these days.

An easy comparison will bring the point home: In the past, there was coffee and coffee with milk or creamer. Now, there are at least seven different coffees for a manager to keep straight and stocked as well as an array of foods.

An often overlooked career is the supplier. Their job is simple: keep the cafe stocked with whatever the manager wants. The premise is simple, but there are some complicated parts to the work. One difficulty is navigating the cafes and looking for buyers. It can be tricky to navigate these waters, but they must be braved, and over time, it is very possible to develop great business ties.

As time goes on, it seems that society keeps wanting more and more coffee and in different and new and exciting ways. This has lead to an increase in cafes. In some cities, they seem to be on every corner. The effect is nothing but good for those looking to work in the industry: new and better better paying jobs.
